Summary: The Bytown Railway Society (BRS) is recruiting for a qualified candidate to join the Board of Directors to assume the role of Treasurer. 

Mission: The Bytown Railway Society is a charitable organization chartered under the laws of Canada whose purpose it is to facilitate, aid, and promote an interest in Canadian railway history and other related transportation and communication media; and to own, preserve, acquire, maintain, and restore artifacts or relics relating to the history of railways. 

The Treasurer is Responsible to: Board of Directors 

Remuneration: Service on BRS’ Board of Directors is without remuneration 

Term: (renewable) 2-year terms. 

Duties

  • Sits on the Board of Directors and is a key member of the executive. The Treasurer oversees the financial matters of the Society in line with good accounting practices and in accordance with the law and financial controls and procedures that have been put in place.
  • Maintains the books and reports on the current financial position of the organization at each Board of Directors meeting.
  • Write cheques in a timely manner to the Society’s suppliers.
  • Prepares the Society’s Financial Statements following the year end and presents them to the membership by the April general meeting.
  • Prepares the annual returns for CRA and Industry Canada returns

Time Requirement

  • Board meetings occur monthly, in the evenings, 10 times a year, at least 2 hours, plus an additional 20 to 30 hours/month to post items and prepare financial statements and reports.

 

Preferred Skills:

Skills and Competencies

  • A good fundamental knowledge of accounting procedures and practices.
  • Desktop/laptop, a scanner/copier, internet access
  • Proficiency in the use of the Excel spreadsheet.
  • Must provide a recent Police Record Check or be willing to apply for one.
